That sad irony of the situation in Saluda is that, as the saying goes, "Texas was born in Saluda" because two major heroes of The Alamo in 1836 were James Butler Bonham and William Barrett Travis, both of whom were born in Saluda. Bonham was born right in this house outside of town. After they helped wrest control of Texas from the Mexicans 171 years ago, the Mexicans have now returned to take over Saluda. The only difference is that the first time there was a fight.
